Lucia Tait Tolani

Personal Stylist

An effortlessly elegant and singularly stylish sensation from New York, Lucia Tait Tolani now resides in Hong Kong, but only a handful of the city’s discerning and discreet know of her company — a by-invitation-only personal styling service originally named Pair and now rechristened Lucia Tait Tolani.

“After much discussion with friends, colleagues and clients, it was unanimously decided that in adding interiors to the services, business should be conducted under my name, as it’s standard industry practice,” she explains of the seemingly sudden change in company name and title. “After doing my private styling events under Pair for three years, I found what people were really drawn to was the intimacy, trust and discretion I provided as a stylist personally, not as a ‘service’. In my mid-thirties, I also feel more confident than I ever have about my experience and expertise.”

She’s expanding her business by adding interiors where, as in fashion, trends and taste play a part. She’s studied the city and is optimistic for the future. “In terms of fashion and luxury, in Hong Kong you have amazing access to high-profile events and people that you wouldn’t have elsewhere,” she opines. “This is because it’s a city that punches above its weight in consumption and is still one of the most accessible and best-liked stops in Asia.”

Old guard beware: according to Tait Tolani, Hong Kong is finally dropping its blind slavishness toward designer brands in favour of the quirky designers now making their mark among fashionistas. “I have loads of success every time I bring new brands and designers here. I think a designer truly has to understand who their client is — the basis of the brand should be client first, not ‘me and my talent’ first — although you better have talent! That’s how you make a mark today, in how you make people feel.”

We close by asking if she sees herself more as stylist, entrepreneur or working mum? Depending on the hour, she answers, all of the above.
