Among high-end fashion houses, Saint Laurent stands out for having successfully tapped into the world of gadgets by collaborating with tech brands to roll out products that meet the needs of our digital age, with fashion and function, of course. For its latest partnership, the French maison has joined forces with Japanese audio and sound system experts Cotodama to bring forth a limited-edition version of its popular Lyric Speaker Canvas, which was first launched by Cotodama in 2018.
The high-tech speaker features two overlaid black panels; the front panel is actually a screen displaying song lyrics, while the board behind is a hi-fi audio speaker with the Saint Laurent logo imprinted on it. The design of the machine is intended to evoke the look of old vinyl record jackets — it’s even similar in size — and promote listeners appreciation for song lyrics. The all-black, minimalistic design is very much in line with the brand’s super sleek aesthetic, and we think it would make a stylish art piece for any home.
Hit play and the front panel canvas links up with PetitLyrics, Japan’s largest lyrics database company, to grab the words to the track so you can follow and sing along. The machine is also programmed to pick up the style and character of a song and select from a database of fonts and animations, all to align with the intended mood: Think cursive script handwriting displayed for romantic ballads and chunky graffiti text for punchy hip-hop. For wordless songs, abstract animations are used instead of text, bringing a visual component to the audio experience.
The Saint Laurent x Cotodama Lyric Speaker Canvas retails for US$2,665 (approx. HK$20,785) and is compatible with most music software including Airplay, Amazon Music, Chromecast, Google Cast, Spotify, YouTube and other major streaming services. The only bad news? It’s available exclusively at Saint Laurent Rive Droite stores in Los Angeles and Paris, so you’ll have to make some special arrangements in order to get your hands on one.
