We’ve always had a soft spot for the semi-open-top Targa, the 911 that, to us, offers the ideal compromise between fresh-air fun and fixed-roof comfort and solidity. Indeed, the last Targa we spent time in – an all-wheel-drive 4 GTS 991.2 model – struck us as very possibly the best all-round 911 we’d ever had the pleasure of driving.

Now, with the unveiling of the brand-new Targa, we can say that all key gaps in the latest 992-generation line-up have been more or less filled. Better still, Porsche’s engineers have pretty much lifted the roof section and mechanism from the outgoing car and grafted it on to the new one, so not only does it look equally as good, but it also works just as well. Otherwise, the Targa – though inevitably somewhat heavier – offers much of the same combination of dynamic brilliance and everyday usability that so impressed us when we drove the latest Carrera 4S just a few months back.

The standard Targa 4 (it only comes with all-wheel drive) gets a 380bhp version of the 3-litre flat-six out back; slap down a heftier chunk of cash and you get the powerful 4S, with a maximum speed of around 304km/h and 0-100 acceleration in a blinding 3.6 seconds. Whichever one you plump for (or even if you decide to wait until a new GTS sees the light of day), you won’t go wrong with this new iteration of a classic that’s been delighting enthusiasts since the mid-1960s. To our eyes, in fact, it’s a veritable peach of a Porsche.
