Since its inception 20 years ago, the Rainforest World Music Festival has blossomed into an internationally acclaimed world music festival staged against the majestic backdrop of the lush rainforest in Kuching, Sarawak. The annual music festival celebrates the diversity of world music by showcasing a range of international musicians and performances, drawing in audiences from around the world.
This year marks the inaugural debut of the Rainforest Fringe Festival (RFF), a 10-day festival which will run from 7 to 16 July 2017 in Kuching. Brought to you by the man synonymous with George Town Festival, Joe Sidek has once again lend his magic touch to the Rainforest Fringe Festival by curating an exciting line-up of art installations and exhibitions that highlights notable Sarawakian artists, photographers and designers.
“Sarawak is such a wonderful state – it has these interesting layers of beautiful art, nature, rich history, traditions and cultures – referencing the famous Sarawak kek lapis (layered cake). This frequently visited part of Borneo is well known for its melting pot of cultural identities and their limitless creativity. Apart from traditions, it is rich with natural resources for ecotourism; from national parks, forest reserves to beautiful picturesque beaches,” according to festival director Joe.
The Rainforest Fringe Festival is a prelude to the Rainforest World Music Festival and will take place across various Kuching landmarks such as The Old Court House and Kuching Amphitheatre. Highlights include Sada Kamek: Music of Sarawak, an evening concert that features local powerhouse Dayang Nurfaizah in collaboration with Mathew Ngau on the sape, art exhibitions by Jimmy Nelson and K.F. Wong and an exclusive show by fashion designer Ong Shunmugam who collaborates with pua kumbu artisans.
The Rainforest Fringe Festival is hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sport Sarawak, in collaboration with Sarawak Tourism, and the Rainforest World Music Festival. Visit www.rainforestfringe.com for more details
