Award-winning Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, with his distinctive voice, narrates Timeless Thoughts, the 20-minutes documentary that precedes the Giorgio Armani Spring/Summer 2021 show.
Introduced by the famous quote “It’s necessary to know the past in order to build the future,” the first part of the short movie features an evocative selection of images and archive interviews that celebrate Armani’s signature style and decades-long career before the presentation of to the new collection, broadcasted for the first time on TV.
“In 1975, supported by Sergio Galeotti – his first and only partner – Armani set off an adventure that still continues today: he decided to dress real people,” explains Favino while archival footage shows the designer drawing and working on different textiles in the 1980s.
Throughout the documentary, Giorgio Armani’s subtle and yet intriguing language constantly evolves while staying true to its core and distinctive aesthetic, one that makes his creations almost instantly recognisable swinging from classic rigour to sensuality and eccentricity.
Through a series of interviews with international superstars and prominent Italian figures, like Giuseppe Sala, the mayor of Milan, the film also puts emphasis on the country’s savoir-faire and excellence, of which Armani and his brand are enduring symbols.
“His vision remains the same as it was 45 years ago and so does his modernity. Indeed not only his thought but also his work is timeless,” recites Favino. “Only when it is not excessive can beauty be timeless: subtracting and simplifying are the only means to enhance it.”
This concept is at the core of the Spring/Summer 2021 collection, where silhouettes, for both men and women, are essential, soft and fluid.
Whether the pieces are matte or shimmering, it is the sense of measure that keeps asserting itself, overcoming time with a blend of pure lines and neutral colours.
