Jasmin Pang, founder and designer of JSMP, shares how her unique made-to-measure designs are creating quality everyday clothing for people of all body shapes and sizes.
Pang fills us in on how she goes about designing her collections with real life muses in mind.
I’ve always had a strong passion for fashion since I was a child and dreamt of being a fashion designer one day. However, growing up in a relatively traditional Chinese family meant that studying a fashion design degree at university was not an option for me. I ended up studying mathematics and actuarial science at university, then spent 10 years in the insurance industry. During that time, I spotted a market gap for quality everyday clothing for men and women of all body shapes and sizes. I decided to make the leap to start my own brand.
Our made-to-measure service is the foundation of the brand – it meets the market need for perfectly fitted clothing, while offering a personal and unique shopping experience to consumers. A lot of our customers tell us how they love being able to explore our designs, while including their preferences in the final product. I think this is an important reason why many customers return to JSMP.
Other than that, craftsmanship is at the core of the JSMP brand. All of our pieces are meticulously crafted by local in-house pattern cutters and seamstresses using premium fabrics. I believe this is also why customers value us so much.
Having followed fashion and been a shopper all these years, I find a lot of designers make beautiful clothes that they love, but I think a true designer solves people’s problems. Our collections are designed to be versatile to suit the variety of activities of modern lifestyles, be it a client meeting, a cocktail event or a resort holiday. I design all of these based on different body types, so everyone will find something they love in my collections.
Instead of riding on current trends, JSMP’s clothes are designed based on real people – the brand has been working with inspirational men and women in Hong Kong to come up with distinct, unconventional designs for its collections. Each design embodies part of the personality and life motto of the model who represented it, therefore they are named after the models.
We’ve had the pleasure working with entrepreneur Allan Zeman, architects Bryant Lu and JJ Accuna, and stylist Veronica Li to name a few, out of a collage of wonderful and successful men and women. With the variety of people who inspired the made-to-measure designs at JSMP, everyone will be able to find something that they identify with.
Although each piece is designed with a different muse in mind, the collection together stays true to my love of structural yet practical designs as well as repeated patterns. Silk is featured in many of my creations as I love the luxurious softness of the fabric – anything made with silk is easy to dress up or down. I also like infusing modern oriental elements, especially in the men’s collection as many of our customers love mandarin collars.
