Dee Poon

While most of the world ground to a halt during the pandemic, Dee Poon was busy working on building the Pye and Determinant labels, the latter a clothing brand of Esquel, where she’s managing director and chief brand officer. Under Poon’s leadership, Determinant made headlines last year for its donation of 300,000 masks to the needy during the peak of the pandemic. In a much-needed response to single-use masks, by June 2020 more than 30 million re-usable DET30 masks had been shipped worldwide to both private and public sectors. A Harvard graduate, Poon serves on the boards of the Asia Art Archive, M+, West Kowloon Cultural District and the YL Yang Esquel Education Foundation, and is actively involved in the Ownership Project of Oxford University’s Said Business School, the Social Entrepreneurship to Spur Health project and The Conference Board. As for a soundbite for the rest of the world, she says, “Please stop saying Hong Kong doesn’t have culture. There’s a lot going on if you look closely.”

SUPERPOWER

“My superpower? After the pandemic, staying in the game and staying positive. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”
