On May 30, 2019, Louis Vuitton will release the new Les Sables Roses, made by Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud that pays tribute to the olfactory heritage of the Middle East. It would be the latest addition to 11 perfumes by the House since 2016.
Following Ombre Nomade, Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud pursues his interpretation of this extraordinary legacy. Fascinated by the scents, rites and traditions of a several-thousand-year-old perfume culture, he now orchestrates a composition of contrasts centred around the rose, oud and ambergris, three raw materials that have traversed time and geography to express “something eternal”.
An ode to the magic of the desert Les Sables Roses is an inspiration seized from a moment in time and set to the spellbinding rhythm of the desert: that handful of minutes when night cedes to the promise of a new day. A landscape blanketed in crisp obscurity slowly comes into focus. It warms upon contact with the sun’s first rays, wearing a majestic shade of rose that blends the dunes with the sky.
Guided by a quest for the exceptional since its founding, Louis Vuitton fragrances take shape thanks to the most exceptional quality raw materials. Enamoured by the natural ingredients that have surrounded him ever since his childhood in Grasse, France, the Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud sources the most precious ones from the four corners of the world and strives to enhance them in each of his creations. “At Louis Vuitton, perfumes are about contrast. One element enhances another, and vice-versa,” he notes. He brings this vision to life with Les Sables Roses, a hot-and-cold composition whose ingredients mutually elevate one another. It is a perfume of resolutely simple architecture, to better underscore the richness of its ingredients: a duo of rose and oud, accentuated by ambergris.
Legendary and timeless perfume ingredients, rose and oud have one trait in common: the beauty of their natural scent resides in their complexity. Mindful of eliciting their most noble expression, Jacques Cavallier Belletrud took care to reveal all their facets. To the rose, he offered a blend of two qualities: a light essence with fruity, sparkling accents, and a denser absolute with green, slightly animalistic inflexions to recreate the illusion of a scent whose secret is known only to nature. To oud, “the most primal woody note”, he took all the time necessary to find an essence of exceptional quality.
The strong woody scents are also extracted from oud assam, combined with spicy notes, leather accents, and animalistic facets, making it a favourite among connoisseurs. With the mix of rose, the perfume ignites sensuality and mysterious vibes.
The Tradition of Layering
Layering different perfumes together to create a perfectly unique fragrance trail is not a recent concept. “In the Middle East, personalisation has been around forever,” explains Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. “Women in a harem would layer fragrance in order to each have a distinct olfactory signature that expressed their identity as well as a message, since they used it to convey a desire to seduce the prince… or not.”
Today, layering is widely practised in the Middle East, and its progressively making headway among perfume lovers in the West. Everyone can layer scent dependant on a mood or occasion. Fascinated by a tradition that is simultaneously ancestral and contemporary, Jacques Cavallier Belletrud created Les Sables Roses as a fragrance trail that exists both in its own right and in combination with other scents. Worn in association with Ombre Nomade, for example, “it brings new light to the fragrance, and in return takes on greater density.” And because everyone is free to play with proportions, “1 + 1 = infinity!”
