Swimmer-turned-pop star Alex Fong has fond memories of a childhood spent with his brother, William, and they have an easy camaraderie that speaks volumes of a close-knit family. “When we were young,” says Alex, who represented Hong Kong in the pool at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, “we always swam together – but I was always better!”
The two laugh, William nodding in agreement. “I’m four years older, but I look younger than my lawyer brother,” Alex continues. “In the Chinese zodiac, I was born in the year of the monkey and he’s the year of the rat. We used to fight a lot when we were young, but we’re really close. We don’t see each other or even chat every day, but we’re a traditional family. We don’t talk so much about our personal life. I won’t ask him about his girlfriends, and he won’t ask about mine, but we share hobbies and whenever we meet, we talk about sports, NBA, swimming, art.”
Art? “Yes, my father has an art gallery and shop,” Alex explains. “My father used to say, when we were little, that I used to treat my younger brother like my toy. I was the general and he was my soldier!”
Like many people in the city, the brothers are on a family chat group on their mobiles, and coordinate when everyone is coming together. “We plan every weekend meal as a family,” the singer says. “When we go home, we don’t sit in our own corner, we all sit together.
“When I have my own family in the future, I won’t be a parent who just works and gives money to the kids. We’ll spend quality time together. Being a successful parent, we need to be there for each other as role models. As my parents are.”
