MIND, BODY, AND SOUL
We live in a time when people do not just seek better physical health, but stronger emotional and mental wellbeing. Working out can improve your health, both mentally and physically. But it can have the opposite effect if you overdo it. Wellness is a much more complex state than having a six-pack. To begin the New Year, we go on a search for holistic transformation with several truly inspiring individuals who make wellness the focus of everything they do.
On our cover this month is Michelle Quan, makeup creator, mother and brand ambassador. Although she’s the personification of beauty and wellness and looks a decade younger than her years, there was a period in Michelle’s life when she neglected her health. “I lost myself, which resulted in gaining a lot of weight. I became the most unfit person, and my body called out to me that I couldn’t go on like that forever,” she tells us.
Helena Abidin, formerly of BMW Indonesia, sat down with us to discuss her new role as a meditation facilitator who aims to transform lives through speaking and mindfulness workshops. She tells us about a method called Mindfulness. The method is an effective way to address the challenges faced by corporations and organisations in the current disruptive environment, Helena says. It is “a simple holistic approach to help leaders and employees to be conscious of their individual power to create positive changes, to improve performance and satisfaction”.
For those who dislike or have just had enough overindulgence, wellness travel is all the rage now. “Sumba is the most beautiful place in the world to me,” declares Christopher Burch, owner of the much-admired Nihi Sumba wellness resort in far-flung West Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. “It’s a place where all humans can be revitalised, and wellness is a very large piece of what we do,” he says of a list of holistic activities that includes horse-whispering sessions.
In Thailand, we met up recently with Bruno Huber, General Manager of Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok. This beautiful property combines a five-star hotel with a state-of-the-art clinic. The goal, says Huber, is to elevate the wellness travel industry “from its traditional focus on spa therapies to a completely new level.”
