As events come and go, there’s usually such a thing as the “event of the week” — that stand-out event everyone was at and continues to talk about. This week, said event was the grand opening of Missoni. Though we were a tad late for the 5pm start on Tuesday May 14, the crowd of new arrivals still hadn’t ceased by the time we arrived. You could see guests spilling out of the flagship from three stores down. Part of this could have been a location thing — the Central Embassy venue definitely helped — but the main reason was the brand itself. Opening its doors for the first time, this was the first ever flagship boutique in Thailand for the high-fashion knitwear brand. From which familiar faces we saw, to what went down throughout the night, here’s our Prestige Recap of the affair.
Missoni: What’s the Craze?
Missoni is the brainchild of partners Ottavio and Rosita Missoni, who’d spent their post-marriage days making knitwear items together in the basement of their home. Since then, it has grown into one of the world’s most prominent fashion houses. Today, the Italian high-end label is known for premium knitwear and iconic zigzag patterns. In 1997, the business was handed over to Angela Missoni, now the creative director and president.
Why this particular Missoni store was such a big deal is because, not only is it Thailand’s first-ever Missoni boutique, but it also happens to be the largest Missoni boutique in the whole of Southeast Asia. This is what we mean when we say Bangkok is essentially a gem in the region for avid shoppers and fashion aficionados. Taking up over 200 square metres, the store gives you everything you need from the brand and more, with collections ranging from womenswear to even beachwear, complemented by an impressive selection of accessories.
Even the interior design has a Missoni-focus, interpreting the brand’s heritage through tones and textures. A shoutout goes to the home collections, also showcased in the space — we quite liked the balance between clothes and furnishing, that made browsing the store a rather dynamic experience.
The Event: What Happened Inside?
For such a big event to celebrate Missoni, you obviously need the presence of Angela Missoni. Having flown in especially for the exclusive party, Angela Missoni joined Pranapda Phornprapha — the director of Missi Co., Ltd — to give a warm welcome speech, and then went on to personally greet the guests in attendance. Society’s most prominent personalities mingled away to the sound of sick beats — courtesy of Note Panayanggool — while free-flow champagne, cocktails and small bites were served. We also managed to snag a shot at the photobooth activity in the corner of the event.
While there wasn’t anything particularly exceptional about the snacks, the BBQ tofu with miso sauce was actually surprisingly impressive. The really good food definitely came afterwards, at an even more exclusive sit-down dinner held for a select number of guests. We were asked to commute to Siri House — which, by the way, is fast becoming a staple hang-out spot in Soi Somkid — where we were served a unique course especially prepared by the Quince team for the event. If anything could beat the Quince menu, it was this course.
The Guests: Who went?
While attending the most exclusive events around town is a big part of what Prestige is all about, it’s always more fun when we run into familiar faces. As to really be expected, the grand opening of Missoni was filled with good friends — possibly why we ended up staying till the end — from Prestige regulars Vatanika Patamasingh Na Ayudhya, Onchuma Durongdej, Apinara Srikarnchana and Sonya Singha (our March cover girl this year!), to the likes of Barom Bhicharnchitr, Matthew and Sarunrat Deane and Sirinya Bishop. Towards the end of the evening, it actually got pretty crowded — scroll to see who else was there.
