Ever since The Joy Luck Club premiered 25 years ago, there’s not been a repeat of a Hollywood movie with an all-Asian cast. This was why the film creators of Crazy Rich Asians turned down a massive offer at Netflix in order to produce an epic concept for audience to enjoy on the big screen.

And this gamble paid off — big time. The movie is probably making book author Kevin Kwan richer as Crazy Rich Asians garnered an estimated US$25.2 million over the weekend, thus topping the box office in the US.
In Singapore, many are likewise going crazy over the rom-com, which includes plenty of scenes shot on our own native soil. It only first showed here yesterday, one week after the global premiere in Los Angeles. Many turned up at Capitol Theatre, including director Jon M Chu and of course, top-billed cast member: Malaysian-British actor Henry Golding.
Our friends and dear followers also rocked the red (actually, more jade) carpet last night to show support for the show. The crowd looked crazy beautiful, are richly diverse, and truly Asian.

On the Red (actually more of a blue) carpet for the Singapore premiere of Crazy Rich Asians. First met the producers 2 years ago when this movie was just coming into being, and so so happy to see the final product! Crazy beautiful, richly conceptualised and very Asian, and a fabulous depiction of the Singapore I Love. Congratulations to the CRA team… I absolutely loved the movie. #CRA #crazyrichasians . . #crazyrichasiansmovie #singapore #moviepremiere #redcarpet #bluecarpet @crazyrichasians @warnerbrossg . #ootd #dress by @aliceandolivia #clutch by @jennypackham #earrings by @zameerkassam #redcarpetready

The premiere of @crazyrichasians in @lovebonito’s upcoming laser cut (on the waist!) jumpsuit. Haven’t really watched a movie in a long while (gasp!) and really enjoyed this! Was also beaming with pride at the SG representations!☺️

On the Jade Carpet at last night’s @crazyrichasians premier! What an amazing film for our country, so proud to see how beautiful our home looks in the movie. Unbelievable that this movie is now No1 in the US Box Office! Anyway the movie is a must-see, well-made, with a great cast, and it captured the humour and nuances of the satirical novel by @kevinkwanbooks It’s true it doesn’t “represent” Singapore in all its cultural diversity or portray “real life”, but let’s remember this movie isn’t a documentary, it wasn’t designed to “showcase” Singapore. However, the little red dot benefits nonetheless from basking in the bright blaze of the spotlights. Go enjoy the movie for what it is, a delightful rom-com set in our beautiful city, with a super-talented Asian cast (my one regret… Tyler was offered the role of Ring Boy at the Wedding and I wasn’t able to do it as I was traveling)! Go catch the movie!
