Ever since The Joy Luck Club premiered 25 years ago, there’s not been a repeat of a Hollywood movie with an all-Asian cast. This was why the film creators of Crazy Rich Asians turned down a massive offer at Netflix in order to produce an epic concept for audience to enjoy on the big screen.

And this gamble paid off — big time. The movie is probably making book author Kevin Kwan richer as Crazy Rich Asians garnered an estimated US$25.2 million over the weekend, thus topping the box office in the US.
In Singapore, many are likewise going crazy over the rom-com, which includes plenty of scenes shot on our own native soil. It only first showed here yesterday, one week after the global premiere in Los Angeles. Many turned up at Capitol Theatre, including director Jon M Chu and of course, top-billed cast member: Malaysian-British actor Henry Golding.
Our friends and dear followers also rocked the red (actually, more jade) carpet last night to show support for the show. The crowd looked crazy beautiful, are richly diverse, and truly Asian.
