When it comes to aesthetic beauty discussions, no one could be more passionate about the subject than dr. Kevin Maharis, the founder of Maharis Clinic, a medical aesthetic and wellness clinic located in Setiabudi and Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. He excitedly shared with Prestige an interest in aesthetics and wellness that began when he was just a teenager.
“I really knew I wanted to be in aesthetic medicine since day one of medical school, while most students commonly only decided their chosen area of specialty much later on,” says Kevin Maharis. “Science, humanities and biology have always been subjects in school that I was particularly good at.
At the same time, I’d consider myself a naturally visual person. I really enjoyed art lessons and love all aspects of design. I realised, cosmetic medicine is a perfect field to channel both sides of my interests. Its the perfect profession that combines arts and sciences to improve how people feel about themselves, therefore became my passion.
Dr. Maharis obtained his Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree from University of Melbourne and then earned a medical degree from University of Indonesia before continuing a post-graduate diploma in Dermatology from Cardiff University in Wales, UK.
Driven by his passion on always searching all across the globe for the best available treatment for his patients, six years ago he came across a pioneering technology in non-invasive skin tightening and lifting- Ultherapy!
“It was a famous, well-reviewed machine with good patient testimonies from all over the world and the device wasn’t as well known yet in Indonesia at the time. I got really curious and decided to travel abroad to learn more about it and gave it a try myself. I found Ultherapy was unique because at the time it was the only non-invasive tightening device that received US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval to safely lift the skin of the face, neck and jawlines while improving appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the décolletage. It works with focussed ultrasound waves, making micro-scars under the skin to stimulate collagen production. When performed with the right pain management measure, this treatment is virtually painless require little or no downtime. Result is commonly visible after 2-3 month and I have seen gradual improvement in my own patients for up to a year post treatment. Most patients repeat the treatment after 1-2 years.”
“At that time Maharis Clinic was one of the first few clinics that offered Ultherapy in Jakarta before it becomes the highly-popular treatment it currently is. When I first introduced the treatment, my patients were enthusiastic because most of them are well-travelled individuals who are always updated with the latest medical technology and have probably heard about it from doctors abroad. The machine itself was already popular Internationally and there wasn’t much hesitation for them to come and try. Its always good to be one of the earliest users, my doctors and i have had over 6 years of experience with the technology and enough flight-time to know which treatment combinations work best to enhance patients’ satisfaction”.
“Another reason that made Ultherapy the treatment of choice for a lot of patients is because they hear it from their friends! Nothing promotes better than good result does. So I think word-ofmouth referral has always been the number one driver in my practice” he laughs. “This treatment also doesn’t involve any injection, thread or anything of that sort, making it the ideal treatment for patients who are not ready for a more invasive procedure and as I said before it has no downtime, they can immediately put on make-up and go on with their normal activities right after the treatment,” dr. Kevin adds.
When is the right time to have Ultherapy? “I recommend to start in the late 20s or early 30s, because our collagen production starts to slow down starting in our late 20s thats when some parts of our skin start losing elasticity in fine wrinkles and eventually: sagging cheeks, undefined jawlines, turkey-neck and baggy-bags.
“Ultherapy’s device latest updated setting is called the Amplify protocol, where we focus on giving and stacking multiple layers of micro scars in a controlled way in order to enhance result even more. There are various different types of settings and protocols suited for different needs,so it is best to come in for an in-depth consultation before embarking on this or any aesthetic treatment. As comfortable as it is, at the end of the day it’s still a medical procedure that needs to be taken seriously.”
Finally, dr. Maharis explains that the of Ultherapy treatment is similar to that of an investment, “Just like in finance where you put money in various financial instruments for it to grow so you can retire comfortably, Ultherapy is like collagen banking for your skin, stimulating new collagen growth every year, so you can enter older age gracefully.” He concludes with the most confident smile.
