dr. Ario Soeryo Kuncoro
dr. Ario Soeryo Kuncoro is a cardiologist at Rumah Sakit Jantung dan Pembuluh Darah Harapan Kita and at the Heartology Cardiovascular Center at Rumah Sakit Brawijaya, Saharjo. He is also Yayasan Jantung Indonesia’s Head of Medical Affairs.
“My role with YJI is to carry out the foundation’s vision and mission from a medical perspective,” says dr Kuncoro. “I evaluate and advise on its programmes, with a focus on treating congenital heart problems as well as prevention of heart and cardiovascular diseases.”
Of his work with YJI dr. Kuncoro says the biggest milestone to date is the foundation’s Prevention of Rheumatic Heart Disease project. “This programme is totally new to YJI. It’s important for us because rheumatic heart disease is often overlooked. Many people think it can only be found in developed countries, which isn’t correct. In Indonesia, actually, the rate of rheumatic heart disease is quite high. One of the things we do with the programme is to screen people, especially children of school age, to evaluate their risks of rheumatic heart disease later in life. This is a big achievement for us because a programme like this had not existed in Indonesia before.”
