Ghea Panggabean’s signature jumputan or kain Pelangi textile work inspired her creations for Yayasan Jantung Indonesia’s 40th anniversary celebrations. “Jumputan is one of my favourite Indonesian textiles and is very close to my heart,” explains the prominent fashion designer and Indonesian heritage textiles expert. “It has inspired me since the beginning of my career.”

Her involvement with the anniversary project began when a fellow designer, Didit Hediprasetyo, approached Ghea and asked her if she would like to create and donate a design for the auction. “With pleasure, I wanted to be involved because it is for a noble cause. I know Yayasan Jantung Indonesia is doing many things to help people with heart diseases, so of course I said yes immediately,” Ghea tells us. “I’ve created a collection of items inspired by jumputan, which means rainbow, a symbol of hope. I called my collection ‘A Heart of Hope’.

“I have designed two dresses. One is a saffron yellow silk woven shift with appliqué of jumputan heart in the middle, and embellished with beads. The second is a white silk taffeta dress with, again, the jumputan heart appliqué in the middle, embellished with a lot of veins in a more contemporary modern design. Then there is also a jumputan scarf, which matches the dress. And the last one is tableware – because I have developed a passion for designing it over the last 10 years. I’ve designed plates with a heart patchwork of jumputan. I dedicate this line to YJI.”

The founder of Ghea Fashion Studio celebrated her 40th year in the fashion industry just last year. To mark the milestone, the Netherland-born designer published a book, Asian Bohemian Chic: Indonesia Heritage Becomes Fashion. Published by New York-based published Rizzoli, the book encompasses not only all of Ghea’s collections over the course of four decades, but is also a showcase of Indonesian textiles.
