Anyone acquainted with the beguiling works of Omar Khan will no doubt be familiar with his incredible ability to bring out the true potential of any ordinary object. Regarded by many to be the leading rug designer in Malaysia, Khan’s extraordinary success is a prime example of what happens when preparation meets opportunity.

After graduating from Parson’s School of Design in NYU with a degree in animation, Khan cut his teeth as Head of the Visual Merchandising Department of Hong Kong’s Pedder Group before establishing the Omar Khan Collective design firm in Kuala Lumpur. It didn’t take long for him to realise that his true calling was rug design and, by 2014, Omar Khan Rugs was born.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Khan’s love for all things to do with design and beauty keeps him constantly on the look out for new horizons to discover. Beyond supplying custom rugs to renowned architects and prestigious projects the world over, Khan has also teamed up with local entities such as contemporary carpet retailer, artèfloor. ”We’ve been working together for the past six years; and since day one, we’ve always wanted to do a collaboration together,” Khan states.

Aptly named Grey Matters, this 8-piece collection consists of phenomenal designs measuring 2.4m x 1.7m and 3m x 2m. Fondly named after the designer’s beloved niece and nephews, each handwoven rug was meticulously created using Aurora yarn, an innovative new material comprising 100 percent art silk fibres that have been beautifully carded and spun into single yarns.
Available in 4 monochromatic shades, the lustrous Aurora fibres are both soft and cool to the touch, making it ideal for the humid conditions found in Malaysia. Versatile in appearance, these fibres are also capable of reflecting light which creates an elegant interplay of light and shade.
