Behind the Curtain: Jewellery and Watchmaking Houses presents extensive yet easily-accessible information about the most prominent names in haute joaillerie and haute horlogerie
There’s a certain thrill that comes with finding a rare piece of jewellery or a hard-to-find limited edition watch to your personal collection. Of course, a lot of these discoveries happen at auctions; but whether a collectible item is won through fierce bidding or stumbled upon in an out-of-the-way antique shop in a far-off city, it all boils down to knowledge. And no matter if you’re a casual fan of fine timepieces or an ardent collector of rare jewellery, knowledge of the various maisons, the history of artistic or technical innovation, or famous pieces owned by famous persons can be quite rewarding.
And now, Christie’s – or the Christie’s Education institution, to be exact – has launched an exciting new programme, titled Behind the Curtain: Jewellery and Watchmaking Houses, where anyone can get an introduction into the aforementioned topics.
The online course actually started earlier this month, but runs until late April. It is presented by Geneva-based jewellery historian Vanessa Cron and watch expert Antoine Géraud. Each individual lecture covers a specific house, from Breguet to Rolex, from Cartier to Tiffany & Co., and many more. Participants will learn about the history of each brand, their iconic creations and the ground-breaking innovations attributed to them, along with how each maison grew into time-honoured institutions in their own rights.
In short, Behind the Curtain: Jewellery and Watchmaking Houses affords participants “a connoisseur’s look at the hallmarks of the most sought-after gems of luxury, from material and craft, to technology and design.” An introduction to this introductory course can be viewed here:
