Fondation d’entreprise Hermès presents a special exhibition with Minjung Kim, a Korean artist that juxtaposes Oriental and Western techniques in her contemporary ink paintings. The exhibition, titled “Oneness”, takes place at Aloft at Hermès in Singapore. The art space that is located within the maison’s Liat Towers boutique, is one of only five of its kind around the world. The foundation itself is the maison’s body to support talents in arts and creative works.
“Oneness” is an invitation to visitors to become one with nature. It aims to “disconnects visitors from their hectic, technology-engulfed lives, and reconnects them with ancient wisdom and teachings.” Through her brushwork, Kim creates mountainscapes and seas that complement each other.
Kim’s contemporary ink paintings are influenced by the literati painters from Song and Yuan dynasties, while her stint in Milan results in a progressive aesthetic that enriches her ink works. Besides, the hypnotic quality of her works is “a reflection of self in a Zen state of complete physical and spiritual unity”.
“When I paint on a mulberry hanji paper, I have to wait for the right moment for drawing some lines in ink. Sometimes it takes days and weeks to find the right state of mind. Breathing needs to be absolutely under control in order for me to execute fine lines, especially. I am always aware of the importance of equilibrium,” Kim says.
