The popular belief has it that women are bad with numbers. This story of African-American female NASA mathematicians from the 60s is against the odds. Starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe and Kevin Costner, this adaptation (from a novel of the same title) highlights what previously was under the radar.
Playing at XXI, CGV Blitz and Cinemaxx.
LISTEN | Lorde – Liability
Lorde releases the second single of her upcoming album Melodrama, a week after releasing the first, the upbeat Green Light. The mellow new tune sounds vulnerable with Lorde’s haunting voice, accompanied only by piano. Reading the lyrics, Liability could very well be the singer’s personal experience of fame at a young age.
“The truth is I am a toy that people enjoy/ ‘Til all of the tricks don’t work anymore, and then they are bored of me,” she sings, modulating her voice to convey a certain despair. “I understand, I’m a liability. Get you wild, make you leave.”
READ | Jami Attenberg – All Grown Up
This is a story of a 39-year-old woman who is reluctant to confess her real state of mind. Behind the facade of a designer, a daughter, a friend, and a sister, is a lonely drinker. The book invites readers to contemplate on self-identity and self-love from a perspective of a female author.
