When you pick a watch, which feature attracts your attention most? The first thing that catches our eyes first are the dials. It is usually in the dials where luxury watchmakers show off their high-craftsmanship.
We have picked 5 watches with the prettiest dials.
BUTTERFLY EFFECT – Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31
Launched first in 1945, the Rolex Datejust is the modern archetype of the classic watch. This new creation of the Oyster
Perpetual Datejust 31 is introduced with redesigned case sides and lugs and fitted on a President bracelet. It is equipped with
calibre 2236, a new-generation self-winding mechanical movement and fitted with a Syloxi hairspring in silicon that provides
great stability in the face of temperature variations and remains up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring.
Adorned in 18k Everose gold, it also features a diamond-paved dial inlaid with pink mother-of-pearl butterflies.
DEMONSTRATION OF CRAFTS – Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève (SIHH)
For this year’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève (SIHH), Piaget reinterprets the hard stone dials epitomising its style within its ultra-thin Altiplano line. Combining fine watchmaking with the skills of stone marquetry, the Altiplano welcomes a tourbillon and invites malachite and lapis lazuli to adorn its dial. For these two new creations, the dial has been entrusted to Hervé Obligi, Maître d’Art. The Altiplano malachite marquetry tourbillon and Altiplano High Jewellery lapis lazuli tourbillon models offer a demonstration of the crafts carried out at the Piaget workshops in La Côte-aux-Fées and Plan-les-Ouates.
SECOND SKIN – Audemars Piguet Millenary
Audemars Piguet’s new Millenary models come in pink gold with mother-of-pearl dials and diamond-set bezels. The bracelets are made in the classic Polish style, with a supple mesh that fits the wrist like a second skin. The white opal dial is framed by the 18k pink-gold case with a Frosted Gold finish on the case sides, bezel, inner bezel and lugs.
RARE BIRDS – Patek Philippe
Patek Philippe showcased its collection of rare handcraft timepieces at Baselworld 2018, giving visitors an opportunity to discover inspiring dome clocks, pocket watches and wristwatches before these objets d’art continued their journey to private collections across the world. With 50 one-of-a-kind pieces as well as limited editions, the 2018 collection pays tribute to a wide range of ancestral skills, from manual engraving to Grand Feu enamel techniques and miniature painting. Part of a set of three Calatrava wristwatches, Ref. 5077/101 “Pictures in Relief”, this “Birds and Clouds” model’s dial is decorated with hand-executied guilloche work and gold applied ornaments.
WHITE WONDER – A. Lange & Söhne
At A. Lange & Söhne, the name Saxonia stands for minimalistic design. In both new Saxonia models, the focus on essentials is reflected by the harmony of the mother-of-pearl dials and manufacture calibres. The two new models come in 35-mm cases of white or pink gold. The white dial of solid silver is covered with a very thin layer of iridescent mother of pearl. Slender hands and baton-style hour markers in solid gold are complemented with a white alligator strap.
