For the second stop on its global journey, the exhibition showcases 200 imaginative trunks by 200 visionaries from all over the world
How do we celebrate a man whom we have not met, whose face we recognise only from a single portrait and whose story we only know from folk tales? Louis Vuitton is known for his ambitions and achievements, gaining reputation for his box-making among the esteemed and establishing his first shop in the middle of fashionable Paris. He was innovative not just in his craft, producing award-winning waterproof and lightweight trunks, but in many ways he distinguished his products and company from his peers.
And for Louis Vuitton’s bicentennial birthday, the maison wanted to keep looking into the future, celebrating Louis through his values. So the brand embarked on a daunting yet exciting journey, asking 200 individuals from all around the world and across disciplines to share their vision, desires, fears and reflections. Each of the individuals was given a stretch of material measuring 50cm by 50cm by 100cm, approximately the dimensions of the original Louis Vuitton trunk, as a metaphorical blank canvas or vessel to artists, architects, writers, musicians, designers, and many more. The result is an amalgamation of the past, present and future: 200 original expressions contemplating where we came from, where we are and where we might be headed.
Following its debut in Asnieres, Paris, at the Louis Vuitton family house, “200 Trunks, 200 Visionaires: The Exhibition” has made its first international stop in Singapore. The exhibition is open for public starting April 4, 2022 to April 27, 2022, at the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza, just steps away from the Louis Vuitton Marina Bay Store. It takes place within a box shaped building with a silver Damier pattern on each side.
The immersive experience begins in a briefing room panelled in LED screens, then moves on to The Warehouse, where the trunks were staggered at various heights as random configurations and stacked on shipping crates – the original assigned shipping crates in which the trunks will continue on their global journey. On each display is a QR code linking to online resources that further explains the story and inspiration behind the creation. Among the creators are quite a few familiar names, including Supreme, Peter Marino, Lego, Liu Wei, Fornasetti, Marc Jacobs/Stephen Sprouse and NIGO.
The next room, titled Dreamscape, held more imaginative interpretations from the trunk and led to two dedicated rooms. First is an interactive space featuring a trunk by South Korean boy band BTS, on which each member contributed on one side. These designs have also been reproduced on the walls with space for visitors to add their own creations. And the final stop is an audio speakeasy that features a functioning 200-track jukebox trunk by British DJ and producer Benji B.
“This project has always been about creativity – a real tribute to Louis’s ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit. We get to see how much a cross-section of talents answered the same brief while also taking a moment to appreciate the man himself,” says Faye McLeod, Louis Vuitton’s Visual Image Director.
