Alessandro Michele is one out-of-the-box designer, and his magic touch has been working for Gucci, a house that struggled to stay relevant before he came in two years ago. His vision has resulted in Gucci logos seen all over the recent Paris Men’s Fashion Week, while the Gucci black leather slippers become a thing among fashion enthusiasts.
Same goes to ad campaign. Rejecting everything “normal”, Michele’s spring 2017 Gucci campaign was a mishmash of models, predators (lions and tigers) and historical sites (think sunbathing at Trevi Fountain). Sharing a sneak peek of the brand’s pre-fall casting, Gucci posts 9 Instagram videos of the real people who are to be featured in the campaign. They answer questions about their spirit animals, the meaning of soul, and their dancing experiences. The most interesting thing? All 9 of them are black.
In times when protectionism against immigrants angers many, it is definitely timely to make an inclusive stance. The release of the videos are also close to the awards season, which sees actress, including Meryl Streep, speaking up against bullying on the basis of race and nationality.
The models in the upcoming Gucci campaign are cast by Midland Agency, who in the past has auditioned real people for Hood by Air. While Gucci is yet to provide more details about the upcoming campaign, let’s just say this is one of the campaigns we’re actually looking forward to.
