When Sofia Coppola is behind the lens, nothing ordinary is to come out of it. The French director’s latest gig is casting for and directing a Calvin Klein underwear ad, a league of its own. While Gigi Hadid and Justin Bieber were among the stars of the ad, this time around Coppola picks none other than legendary model Lauren Hutton. At 73, Hutton still models and refuses any plastic surgery. Last year, she made headlines upon returning to the runway for Bottega Venetta’s spring/summer 2017 show.
Hutton is in good company while shooting for Calvin Klein. Coppola has gathered six it girls to co-star: Kirsten Dunst, Rashida Jones, Laura Harrier, Maya Thurman-Hawke (daughter of Uma and Ethan), Nathalie Love and Anna Sui’s niece, Chase Sui Wonders. All girls are shot in black and white, donning various pieces from Calvin Klein’s spring 2017 underwear collection. What’s refreshing, yet expected from a Coppola-directed visual, all girls are portrayed as women who are comfortable in their bodies. No man-seducing acts are involved in the video.
Another highlight of the video is naturally Hutton’s famed tooth gap, which initially made it hard for her to start a modelling career. But her strong will and unique quality brought her to sign with L’oreal in 1973, “which at the time was the biggest contract in the history of the modeling industry”. The one-minute video closed with a new tagline: “Calvin Klein, or nothing at all”.
