A new year brings yet another accomplishment for Bvlgari. At Baselworld 2019, the LVMH-owned Roman brand has introduced a new world record for the thinnest ever existing chronograph movement with their Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic. For the women’s side, on the other hand, they launched a bold and new beginning for the world of Serpenti timepieces with Serpenti Seduttori.
The Thinnest Ever
When it comes to Bvlgari, with Italian values that combined with Swiss expertise as the basic foundation, this unique combination has laid key milestones in 21st century watchmaking for the brand with five records just within a few years. These five achievements all stem from the now iconic Octo Finissimo line and each can lay claim to the title of the thinnest in the world in its respective category.
Historically speaking, the first world record was a Tourbillon that launched in 2014, followed in 2016 by a Minute Repeater, then an Automatic movement back in 2017 and the world’s thinnest Automatic Tourbillon model in 2018. Special for this year, Bvlgari presents the thinnest Chronograph, which marks its fifth world record.
Named Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic, this watch is an emblem of Bvlgari expertise. Fitted with a manufactured integrated movement that displays the classical chronograph functions, it also has a GMT function and a world record title for the thinnest mechanical Chronograph in watchmaking history. The sleek watch boasts 55 hours of power reserve but measures only 6.90mm thick. Inside the extra-thin titanium case is the Calibre BVL 318, which measures a mere 3.30mm.
Above all, this Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic also represents the fifth element for the collection. In other words, it is surely the quintessence of Octo, a perfect fusion of technology and design in a remarkably thin body. Neither square nor round, Octo has created its own codes since it was first released and, with its Finissimo collection, successfully helped launch the industry trend for ultra-thin watches.
Other new entries in the Octo line presented at Baselworld 2019 include the Octo Roma Tourbillon Sapphire, which features extraordinary transparency and aerial flying tourbillon, the Octo Finissimo Ceramic that comes with high-tech materials, and the Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Perpetual Calendar, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the first Grande Sonnerie manufactured in Le Sentier by Gerald Genta.
A New Icon
One thing for sure, as impressive as the Octo Finissimo novelties are, the Serpenti line has always been the ultimate Bvlgari line, and the brand never fails to introduce new and exciting references every year. For 2019, the house launched a brand new collection called Serpenti Seduttori. As the current reimagination of the cult Serpenti watch, this new collection features an unprecedented design that represents a bold new chapter for the world of Serpenti timepieces with its iconic drop-shaped watch head, a motif that comes from the
Serpenti Tubogas watch.
Speaking of which, the drop-shaped case and stylized hexagonal bracelet links are perfectly integrated and emphasize a new interpretation of the theme, celebrating the eternal renewal of the icon that was “born to be gold.” Speaking of which, the collection includes watches in rose gold, yellow gold, white gold, and diamond pavé. On top of that, it has a flexible new bracelet inspired by the original Serpenti watches and is crowned in cabochon-cut gemstones in a nod to Bvlgari’s DNA as the Roman jeweler. The result? The new Serpenti Seduttori literally flows on the wrist and radiates an unmistakable aura of power and sensuality.
The Journey Carries On
All in all, within the rich landscape of contemporary watchmaking, Bvlgari successfully breaks the mold with its drastically different approach to creativity, technology, design—in addition to its Swiss watch expertise, the Roman Jeweler is also known for its magnificent design sensibility—and craftsmanship. As the brand is intensifying the impact of its most recognizable icons through two of its master collections: Serpenti and Octo, their capability of fusing edgy, magnificent Italian design with the ultimate Swiss engineering and craftsmanship is truly a revolution. Ultimately, with the two highlights of Baselworld 2019: the new Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic taking home a fifth world record and the Serpenti Seduttori “born to be gold” collection, these pieces champion Bvlgari values and pave the road into a thrilling new future for Swiss watchmaking.
