Watches with cartoon characters might sound like something that little children might enjoy. While that is definitely true, collaborations between cartoon franchises and watchmakers are not that rare, with some cartoon-bedecked timepieces becoming collector pieces. A particularly famous example would be Gerald Genta’s iconic Mickey Mouse watch from the eighties. And speaking of the famous mouse, this Disney icon is now featured on the dial of a pair of new Gucci Grip watches.
To be exact, earlier this year, Gucci has released two Grip models featuring Mickey Mouse on the dial. These are, in fact, also meant to honour the Year of the Rat according to the traditional Chinese zodiac.
Naturally, both timepieces showcase the signature characteristics of the Grip line, which is inspired by the world of skateboarding and – as its name implies – fits snugly on the wrist “much like sneakers stick to the grip tape on a skateboard.” Design-wise, the Gucci Grip Mickey Mouse features a streamlined silhouette of the case and the collection’s trademark two windows on the dial indicating the hours and the minutes. Below the two apertures, Mickey Mouse reclines. Interestingly, Mickey’s eyes light up in the dark thanks to a Super-LumiNova coating.
As for the two variants of the watch, one features a 35mm yellow gold PVD case and a GG Supreme canvas strap, while the other comes in a 38mm stainless steel case with the Gucci’s iconic GG logo engraved on the bracelet. Both watches are powered by Swiss-made Ronda quartz movements and have a water resistance rating of 3 ATM/30 meters.
