Prestige visited the most-anticipated new café in town, Café Kitsuné, to discover the brand’s multi-faceted world in the heart of Jakarta.
Rumours started circulating since the end of 2019, but then the lockdown happened, halting every long-term project as well as restaurant openings. Then around November 2020, Kaja Group announced that the cult-favourite Café Kitsuné would open in one of the most prestigious area in Jakarta. Prestige, of course, couldn’t wait to visit and see what’s inside the world of Kitsuné in Jakarta.
Kitsuné is the brainchild of Gildas Loaëc and Masaya Kuroki. It is a multi-faceted brand that blends fashion (Maison Kitsuné), a music label (Kitsuné Musique) and, of course, cafes, bars and restaurants (Café Kitsuné). Over the last eighteen years, the brand has achieved consistent global growth and developed a loyal fan base all over the world. Jakarta marks the latest launch by the brand, following openings in various metropolitan cities such as Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, New York, Shanghai and Bangkok. The brand now is set to introduce its Paris-meets-Tokyo’s art de vivre to Jakarta urbanites.
Café Kitsuné occupies a 300 square meter space divided into two sections: an indoor area and an outdoor terrace where you can sip your afternoon coffee in an open-air setting. Its interior exudes a warm and inviting ambience, with its signature green colours and the iconic fox emblem (kitsune means fox in Japanese and it symbolises versatility, a testament to the brand’s ability to adapt and change) decorating the walls. A modern interpretation of the classic Parisian bistro, Café Kitsuné Jakarta also seamlessly incorporates Japanese influences inside the café, creating a lively yet elegant feel to the overall ambience.
Going into the food and drinks, Café Kitsuné is known for its good quality coffee, and you can expect the same here in its Jakarta venue. Carefully prepared by a team of passionate baristas using the Café Kitsuné blend roasted at the brand’s own roastery in Japan, the coffee is full-bodied and flavoursome. For those who prefer non-coffee drinks, there are plenty of options to choose from, such as Yuzu & Honey, Matcha Latte, Chai Latte and Charcoal Latte, served either hot or iced. There’s also a selection of gourmet patisseries to accompany your sip of caffeine.
Café Kitsuné’s menu was originally conceived by Chef Yuji Tani, and here in Jakarta it is executed by Jakarta Head Chef Carottama Prasetya. It consists of international dishes; simple yet creative while quite filling. From French bistro classics, American diner must-haves with an added Japanese flair, there’s something for everyone on the menu. The All-Day Breakfast items include of the most interesting choices, from the crowd-favourite Avocado Toast and Eggs Benedict to the Japanese-influenced Azuki Toast: a toasted brioche bun, azuki paste, butter balls, sprinkled with icing sugar. Another highlight is the Dorayaki Pancakes, which are a Japanese-style pancakes with your choice of topping, either whipped cream with berries, dark chocolate sauce or azuki paste with butter.
For lunch or dinner, try their signature Kitsuné Burger, with beef tartare, teriyaki sauce, Emmental cheese, fried egg and bacon, served with homemade French fries and nature mayonnaise. Or go for the Tuna Croque Monsieur where Kitsuné plays its own rendition of the classic toast dish using tuna instead of beef as the protein. One item that is unique to Café Kitsuné Jakarta is the Gyudon – sauteed beef glazed in butter soy sauce and herbs, onions, hard-boiled egg, served with Japanese rice, created by Chef Carottama Prasetya himself. For dessert, try the Daifuku Mochi, which is filled with crème d’Ange and strawberries.
The bar section serves bespoke cocktails, carefully concocted from home-made infusions and syrups. Enjoy them day or night, or whenever you feel like having your cocktails, and try their signature Kitsune Island or Aoyama Gin Fizz. There’s also a selection of wines, liqueurs and sake at the bar. And for those looking to bring a little bit of Café Kitsuné home, the brand offers a collection of accessories, tableware and coffee beans that you can purchase on the spot.
All in all, you can expect a one-of-a-kind café whose signature interior makes you want to stay a bit longer than necessary, and have delicious foods and drinks on the table, whether it’s on your own, with your colleagues or your loved ones.
