Entering October — how we managed to plough through 2019 so fast is still beyond us — we are once again reminded that Bangkok’s drink and dine scene never stops moving. Rich with diversity and in constant change, the city never ceases to amaze with the new and exciting. As you go about making plans to fulfil your palettes, we — as Thailand’s leading luxury authority — naturally relish in being the ones to help guide you in the right direction.
Among the options of what the city has in store this October, we see quite a bit of action in the drinks scene — with two new bar openings, and several new cocktail menu launches. Perhaps it’s pre-drinks season, as we gradually make our way to December’s month of festivities? Also taking place are two much-awaited comebacks: Dusit Thani’s Dusit Gourmet, and the iconic nahm restaurant. From authentic Thai fine-dining to Chinese-inspired cocktails with a view, there’s plenty to get your appetites growing this month. Scroll to see where to drink and dine this October!
Bangkok has unsurprisingly been abuzz with new openings as of late, but here’s one that particularly stands out on our radar. Just around the corner of what was previously the Dusit Thani Bangkok — currently under renovation — Saladaeng road has welcomed the arrival of Dusit Gourmet, marking a revamped come-back of the 50-year old cafe. Part of the larger Baan Dusit Thani space, the charming standalone venue chronicles key moments in the former hotel’s history through friendly vibes, and delectable servings of signature favourites. Set within a white-painted heritage building, expect a homey ambiance, and a space split into three distinct sections — the Social Room, Secret Room, and Glass House. By day, the central counter offers quality teas and coffees, fresh juices, and delightful baked goods, along with a section of international and Asian-inspired bites. Come nightfall, the space becomes an intimate bar, with everything from craft beers to organic wines, and an impressive repertoire of cocktails fused with Asian flavours.
Open 7am-11pm, daily. Dusit Gourmet, Baan Dusit Thani, Saladaeng Road. To reserve your seats or find out more, call 02 200 9009.
A relatively new contender in the speakeasy scene, Mutual Bar is Phrom Phong’s latest buzz. Replacing what was once an arts school in Sukhumvit 24, Mutual gives you a nice remix of retro chic, Bangkok bourgeois, and everything in between. Expect neon signage and comfortable seating around a pill-shaped bar, all basked under an insta-worthy warm pink glow. The penchant for style and substance most likely comes from the key partners behind the project — seven friends hailing from industries that span everything between entertainment to visual arts. The cocktail menu is unpredictable and fun, taking guests from easily appreciated floral delights to out-of-the-box spirit-forward concoctions. For those who are either rebels or just indecisive, there’s also the option of telling the bartenders your preferences and they’ll come up with something for you on the spot.Open 5pm-1am, Tuesday – Sunday. Mutual Bar, Sukhumvit 24. To reserve your seats or find out more, call 0 2550 6820 or visit the official Facebook page.
For those looking to liven up your evening plans, head to Yào Rooftop Bar for unparalleled Bangkok city views, and innovative cocktail concoctions. This October, bar manager Ilhan Beser has curated five new cocktails, inspired by the Chinese elements, and made using ingredients of the Orient. Expect a selection of unique and tasty drinks, cleverly served with referential nods to Chinese culture. The Dynasty Negroni, for instance, gives you a blend of negroni and traditional Chinese spirits, and comes served in an iconic Chinese porcelain teapot. Han’s Fizz comes infused with oriental herbs and citrus peels in a glass flask, reminiscent of Chinese medicinal bottles, while Lights Up On China Town offers a combination of vanilla vodka, lime, and a light scent of melon — served in a light-bulb. If you’re the type who enjoys late-night bites with your drink, the venue has you covered with their “Midnight Dim Sum” concept.

After a summer break that seemed to last just a wee bit too long for avid gourmands, COMO Metropolitan Bangkok has finally relaunched its iconic nahm restaurant, with award-winning chef Pim Techamuanvivit back at the helm. Internationally renowned as a chef who champions the rapidly disappearing flavours of her Thai youth by crafting them into extraordinary plates full of depth and excitement, chef Pim has created a new menu especially for the restaurant’s revamp. All about heritage, nostalgia and a penchant for the very best artisanal produce available, dishes on this re-imagined menu are full of sentiment and quality. One of the dishes, for instance, is kanom jin nahm prik — a dish she learned from her grandmother, who would make it for her as a child. Locally-sourced, fresh ingredients aside, nahm maintains its focus on sustainability, this time even extending to its tableware. The restaurant’s new revamp comes complete with new products on the dining table, all created by a local ceramist, who uses clay that includes only natural ingredients from different regions of Thailand.
THB1,800++ for the lunch tasting menu, THB3,200++ for the dinner tasting menu. nahm, COMO Metropolitan Bangkok. To reserve your seats or find out more, call 0 2625 3333, or visit comohotels.com.
Our beloved Foodie Collection is back with yet another addition to the buzzing group. Right next door to the ever-dapper Vesper, 1919 Italian Bar & Restaurant is dedicated to the iconic negroni cocktail, and what they like to call the “Italian art of having a good time.” Expect to see none other than negroni maestro Supawit “Palm” Muttarattana — Group Bar Manager and champion of Campari Bartender Competition Asia 2019 — working his magic behind the bar, serving up classic negroni drinks along with exciting variations, including his award-winning ‘Spatial Concept’. As it is frowned upon to drink with an empty stomach in Italy, also expect to see an incredible selection of Italian comfort food, especially prepared to accompany your drinks. We definitely recommend the braised-till-tender boar lasagne, while the black ink pizzetta with clams is also deserving of a shoutout.
11pm-midnight, Monday – Friday. 5:30pm-midnight on weekends. 1919 Italian Bar & Restaurant, Convent Road. To reserve your seats or find out more, call 0 2236 5558, or visit 1919bkk.co.
For those who are looking to have an extra special afternoon, why not head over to The Okura Prestige Bangkok for a spot of afternoon tea, and their new cocktail menu? Available throughout the day, the hotel’s Up & Above Bar has launched a new selection of winter-warmer cocktails, featuring herb and spice-infused concoctions that really do wonders to brightening your day. If you’re looking for something refreshing, opt for the DYCC To Taste, which gives you a vibrant blend of drambuie, six-year-old Canadian Club, green cardamom and fresh yuzu juice. The Strawberry Ginger also gives you an interesting blend of havana rum, strawberry puree, old ginger, lemon, and maple syrup. Our favourite by far, however, is the Komcharat Chrysanthemum — named after the talented mixologist, this one offers a heady mix of florals, and is topped off nicely with gold powder. If you want to have fun but still need to be responsible, worry not — there are also herbaceous mocktails available!
Prices start at THB250++. 12pm-midnight. Available until December 30, 2019. To reserve your seats or find out more, call 0 2687 9000.
