British food has been enjoying something of a revival over the past few years, having been championed by a slew of celebrity chefs who have taken the culinary world by storm. And now that British classics are firmly back on the menu, foodies are always on the hunt for their next fix of Anglo-inspired dishes.
Hong Kong-based gourmands are in luck, as the Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong has brought the executive chef and the executive pastry chef from the hotel’s London outpost to town to present several exclusive “Best of London” menus that are available until March 16.
Emil Minev, executive chef at The Shangri-La at The Shard, London, is making eleven à la carte items and a dinner set menu during his stay at Lobster Bar & Grill. The set menu begins with a starter of Dorset crab, which is accompanied by light and summery cucumber and tomato. After that there’s another seafood course, of hand-dived scallops, before moving on to the main of Rhug Estate organic lamb loin or John Dory served with sweet potato, burned butter and wild mushroom.
The meal ends with an Asian touch of pineapple sorbet served with passion fruit, yoghurt and coconut financier. The five-course set menu is available for HK$888 plus 10 percent service charge. All of the items on the set menu are also available as à la carte options and, if you happen to be in London anytime soon, are also available at TĪNG restaurant at the Shangri-La at The Shard.
Alongside Minev, pastry chef Nicholas Patterson is also in town and is serving up afternoon tea sets in the Lobby Lounge and Island Gourmet. Patterson’s classic three-tier afternoon set includes a range of traditional sandwiches including London-smoked salmon, organic chicken, egg mayonnaise, cucumber and Cornish crab.
The pastry tier is a little more unusual and includes exotic offerings such as the Rou Nen, a white chocolate mousse, mango, citrus madeleine and sesame seed croustillant. But after the charmingly surprising pastries, Patterson returns to tradition with the warm plain and Earl Grey scones, which come served with strawberry jam and Cornish clotted cream. The afternoon tea is available for $318 for one person or $538 for two, both subject to a 10 percent service charge.
