If at first you don’t succeed (and with braids, you rarely do), try and try again.
The temptation of a quarantine haircut is as real as it was back in March, and with the reopening of hair salons adhering to guidelines, it’s time to walk the talk. If you’re not ready for a haircut, maybe what you need is to learn a new style and jazz up your everyday look.
Enter braids.
Here’s how you can learn to master — with time and effort — these three artistic styles.
The braided headband
A style that offers a pleasing frame for a face while still allowing you to show plenty of length: the braided headband is trending for this summer. It is a simple solution for a chic laidback look that is perfect for the beach, daytime excursions and summer evenings. But how on earth do you master it without spending hours in front of a mirror? Followed by 1.4 million fans, the YouTube channel Coiffures Simples offers a tutorial that shows you how it’s done in a little over five minutes. It is a style that is a lot less daunting than you might think.
Summery braids
Missy Sue has over a million followers on YouTube and Instagram and is often cited as being a source of inspiration of brides to be. She regularly presents hair tutorials for her followers, and focuses on short easy steps that she shows on her own enviable long hair. In the one below, she explains how to create summery half up-half down styles, perfect for the beach. In one she creates two braids that offer a chic but natural boost of volume and texture while another incorporates thin braids that wrap around a ponytail.
Jumbo box braids
A perfect summer style that protects dry, curly and frizzy hair against hot temperatures and facilitates optimal regrowth, box braids are also very practical for going on vacation, because you can keep them for three to four weeks. That is not to say that you don’t have to look after your hair, but you don’t need to shampoo as often, just spray it twice a day with a conditioner, oil and water mix. On her YouTube channel, TheChicNatural shows her almost two million followers how to create box braids in around ten minutes. It is a style that is suitable for many types of hair, and one that allows you to play with different thicknesses, lengths and even colors.
