The Best Coffee In Kuala Lumpur: Where To Get Your (Much Needed) Fix

You know what they say: first you drink the coffee, then you do the things. These days, it’s not impossible to find a good coffee spot just around the corner. To be fair, they all make good coffee — but when it comes local coffee culture, we’ve got our own favourite cafes to get the best coffee in Kuala Lumpur.

The caffeinated scene here is inspired mostly by international influence (Australia, in particular), translated by Malaysians who have just returned home. So much has it impacted our local culture, that coffee is not just about drinking it. Artisans go above and beyond crewing to educate other likeminded coffee-lovers on the craft. You’ll find workshops, tasting sessions, and evolving menus of caffeine-based beverages.

Common Man Roasters
Common Man Roasters

It’s ‘speciality coffee for the common man’. CMR’s green bean buyers travel the globe to source out beans from places like East Africa, South America, Sumatra and India. Through a partnership with the Australian coffee roasters Five Senses Coffee, CMR gets access to raw products for unique house blends.

Located within APW in Bangsar, the store is even equipped with a cupping room, a service workshop and of course, a cafe. These roasters practice micro production methods which allows them to be very meticulous with each cup. We highly recommend their cold brew coffee!

Merchant's Lane

Owner Ken was inspired to open up this quirky cafe after working at restaurants in Sydney, where he learnt to appreciate truly good coffee. Known for their strong blends roasted locally, you won’t go wrong with a double shot flat white here.

Only recently moving from Sri Hartamas to the cosy neighbourhood in Bangsar, Podgy is not just a great coffee spot, it also serves delicious all-day-breakfast. If you’re looking for an Instagram-worthy cafe with the cutest latte art, this is it.

VCR Café
VCR Café

Tucked in an old-school row of shophouses, VCR Café is a place to sit down, get comfortable and like most of the patrons, get some work done on your laptop. The highly recommended brew here is the Tanzanian Karatu coffee beans. There’s a newer branch in Jalan Telawi 3 too.
