Getting into the August grind, this week is gearing up to be one tailored to the inner artist. If you find yourself stuck in the same old, try new things, meet new people, and find new appreciation in the finer things in life like art and music. Why not right now? There’s Malaysia’s biggest two-day jazz festival known as Publika Jazz 2019 edition, an art exhibition we’re especially looking to support at it benefits cancer awareness, guest bartender takeovers at Bar Shake, and a week of fashion shows in conjunction with Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2019 at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur (by invitation only). Fill you planner up with some of these events:
Celebrating Merdeka a week early (because why not?), GMBB is honouring local designers, online retailers and entrepreneurs at Local Fashion Art. The event encompasses a bazaar, workshops, food trucks, and the highlight we're looking forward to; fashion shows on 24 and 25 August. Brands getting some love here include the environmental-friendly T.O.T.D, Len by Yenn Lim with its bursts of vibrancy, and the gorgeous handmade designs of Foxy.
If you've been looking for a new watering hole to check out, it's the perfect time to head to Bar Shake because the guest collaboration series continues with two takeovers this month. On 22 August, Khongpol Meesok, Bar Manager of the elegantly restored 1900s Baan Suriyasai estate in Bangkok takes over the bar, followed by a guest spot on 25 August with Shirmy Chan, Bar Manager of local whisky-centric speakeasy 61 Monarchy. The takeovers start at 8pm all the way to 12am. To nab a seat, send a WhatsApp to the number below or slip into @barshake.kl's DMs on Instagram.
Daniel Adams is a Malaysian conceptual, portrait photographer, who with the help of partners, has brilliantly put together an exhibition with all artwork on sale. 50% of the profits will be donated to Cancer Research Malaysia. The art was inspired by Daniel's mother, Grace, who passed away in 2017 after a year-long battle against breast cancer. Dedicated to Grace and others who have lost someone to cancer, Daniel's 13 series of images revolve around a specific emotion he felt during his time of grief. He shares, "This project was a labour of love over 16 months, which became an integral part of my journey to recovery and healing." The exhibition auction will be held from 10am to 7pm.
A Love Once Lost Exhibition
Two days, 20 acts, and more than 150 local jazz talents and international musicians. Excited yet? The festival is taking over Publika with performances at The Square, Black Box, The Social, and The Bee. With a long list of jazz cats taking the stage, ones you surely don't want to miss us include 9 Lives and Friends, Gabriel Lynch, and Froya.
