Merdeka! As we’ll be celebrating Malaysia’s independance on the 31st, this week revolves around a celebration of the nation, starting with a tribute to the late Yasmin Ahmad. The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (Klpac) honours local talent with the second instalment of ‘Yesterday Once More’, while hotels like W Kuala Lumpur celebrates twice the fun in conjunction with their own anniversary, and The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur is throwing a foodie feast. More details:
Old is gold with the second instalment of Yesterday Once More, after a sold out show in 2018. With the support of KLPAC’s partner, Creador Foundation, the show encompasses popular renditions of hits from the 50s up to the 70s. Director Ian Chow explains, “The inclusion of the 70s disco era where more keyboards and synthesizers were used in compositions will certainly give the concert a new edge and an altogether different feel.” Remember all the words to ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’, ‘Imagine’, and ‘I Will Survive’? You’re more than welcome to sing along.
Sharing Yasmin’s outstanding artistry and compassion through her talent, a series of events are scheduled for this Sunday; the screening of her movies ‘Sepet’ and ‘Muallaf’, a sharing of stories from a special guest speaker, as well as a meet and great with the movies’ cast and crew. The event takes place from 12pm to 7pm. All profits from tickets will be donated to Mercy Malaysia, Yasmin’s favourite charity.
Yin yoga is a physical practice where students are thought to hold restorative poses for longer periods, helping the practitioner to find relaxation within stressful environments. The workshop will be conducted by Amber Houbara, a young aspiring yoga teacher, where she will guide students into yin poses that support the meridian of both kidney yin and lung yin – the organ that is mostly harmed from a busy, stressed and overly “yangi” lifestyle. The workshop takes place from 12pm to 2pm.
In conjunction with W Kuala Lumpur’s first anniversary, the hotel is collaborating with luxury fitness gym Babel. Fit for an intense sweat session. Spend your morning on the Wet Deck with a view of the Twin Towers, with two power-packed back-to-back classes; Animal Flow and HIIT20 on water. The workouts are always fun, powerful, and gruelling – in a good way. Fuel up before (but preferably after) with a selection of small bites.
Celebrate Merdeka the most Malaysian way there is: food, and lots of it. The St Regis Kuala Lumpur’s rooftop restaurant, Crystal, will be serving an exclusive 6-course culinary journey through all 14 states of Malaysia. The menu is an extension of Crystal’s popular “Warisan Melayu” dinner, commemorating our country’s gastronomic ingredients, flavours and legacy.
