Married for four years, this couple had met on a double date. Sara had first made friends with Bernie’s former girlfriend through an internship programme. And no, there was no cheating involved – both had ended their respective relationships before their friendship blossomed into courtship. He recounts: “I’ll never forget the day I met Sara because I was asked to give her a lift and wasn’t expecting this Ah Lian – whom my then- girlfriend had spoken highly about – with a streak of bright red hair who got into my car and loudly exclaimed, ‘Wah piang eh’!”
What are the differences between the two of you?
Sara Shen (SS): I am very decisive and impatient; he is the total opposite.
Bernie Leung (BL): I guess I’m more of an easy-going and come-what-may kind of person, whereas Sara is extremely driven. Also, she has a higher risk appetite as I’m typically more conservative in my decision-making. However, I feel these differences do not set us apart but complement us. Her go-getting personality helps push ideas and projects forward, and my conservative attitude acts as a sort of check and balance.
Antidote to his/her bad day?
SS: Buy him ice cream and potato chips or go for a drive at midnight when the roads are empty.
BL: I cannot share my secret or else there will be no more surprises! However, pictures and videos of our darling daughter Emma usually work wonders.
Will you be celebrating Valentine’s Day?
SS: We have not celebrated it since the beginning of our courtship because when you are with the right person, every day is Valentine’s Day!
BL: I don’t believe that you must have a special day to honour and cherish your significant other or spouse.
