Angelyn Chong first impression on Mah Kok Wah was an amusing encounter. “He was studying with my sister in Australia and even when they came back to Malaysia, they hung out quite often. And that was when my sister had this idea of introducing me to Kok Wah during one of those gatherings. The one thing I remember clearly was him being late and when he arrived, my thought was, why is everyone introducing me to this ‘uncle’?” she laughs heartily, explaining that the reason she used the term ‘uncle’ at that time was because she had just shyly passed 18 and he was six years her senior.
“I was 24 years old, yes, but I wouldn’t call myself an uncle,” Kok Wah comically shakes his head as if he was disappointed with Angelyn. “Well, my sister’s friends were just teasing, but it was pretty memorable,” Angelyn added with a smile. While elaborating more about their relationship, Angelyn acknowledges that her sister definitely played a big role in it. “My sister was pretty sneaky, setting us up and all. She would ask me to hang out with her and some friends. And guess what? She always failed to mention Kok Wah’s name and I would see him at the venue,” she notes with a slight frown, a playful indication to Kok Wah that he was never welcomed.
To that, Kok Wah proudly admits to the whole scheme and chuckles hearing what Angelyn had to say, adding that it took her some time to finally agree to go out on a date with him, unsupervised. “Well, I guess it’s because I’ve never had a boyfriend before (yes, Kok Wah is my first and last boyfriend) so I was nervous about the whole dating situation,” Angelyn reveals.
