ADAM KAMAL

Restoration Biologist, Rimba Jiva

A passionate conservation biologist by training, Adam Kamal graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, focusing on vertebrate and vascular plant ecology and evolution. He looks up to naturalists Aldo Leopold, John Muir, and Teddy Roosevelt with great admiration and has served as a Project Consultant for the Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre (TRCRC).

At TRCRC, Adam developed various baseline study designs, Geographical Information System (GIS) monitoring systems and advocated for environmental education and on-field programmes. Today, he lends his remarkable expertise in rewilding degraded ecosystems with Rimba Jiva.

Adam uses information gathered by naturalists to make informed decisions regarding the ecological state of the land. “I do the best I can to determine the potential for natural seed dispersal and presence of canopy trees currently on site. Good ecologists can expedite restoration by recreating canopy conditions in degraded areas that connect existing forest fragments,” he explains.

“Malaysia has an enormously rich biodiversity, and it is understudied and underappreciated. The further Malaysians detach themselves from their biodiverse heritage, the harder it will be to protect,” he cautions. “Single-use plastics need to be made less readily available in places with no system to deal with excess trash. Everyone should practice Leave No Trace ethics and go play outside!”
