Tan Chuan Lye

Tan Chuan Lye will have spent 36 years with Sats when he retires as its president and CEO in this month. An aviation industry veteran, Tan is credited with helping to grow and transform Sats into what it is today, playing a pivotal role in aligning the group’s strategy and in championing productivity and innovation. Under his watch, Sats lessened its dependence on the cyclical aviation industry, successfully positioning itself to take a bigger bite of the non-aviation food pie. In the next five years, the supply of food to hotels, restaurants and mining companies is expected to grow to almost a third of its catering sales from the current 22 percent. Tan also oversaw Sats’ acquisition of Temasek Holdings’ entire stake in Singapore Cruise Centre for $110 million in 2013, gaining 96.8 percent ownership of the Centre for Sats. Tan joined the airport catering and services group in 1976 and held managerial positions in SIA Ground Services and Sats Airport Services before he was appointed president and CEO in 2012, after an eight-month-long global search. He will be succeeded by former chief executive for HSBC’s operations Alexander Charles Hungate.
