Dzuleira Abu Bakar

CEO, Technology Park Malaysia Corporation Sdn Bhd

The secret to success can be defined in a single word: grit. Dzuleira Abu Bakar, the former CEO of the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC), is talking about qualities that are essential to entrepreneurs, when she points out, “I believe self-discipline is probably the single most important quality for success in life and business. It sets the tone on how you manage your emotions, actions and reactions, which ultimately leads to success in whatever you set out to do.”

Dzuleira has been appointed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) as the new Technology Park Malaysia Corporation Sdn Bhd (TPM) chief executive officer, effective April 15, 2021.

According to Dzuleira, there are several factors that make Malaysia the perfect spot for start-ups. “The Malaysian workforce is one that vastly speaks the global language – English!” she enthuses. “Next up, Malaysia’s population size (not too big or too small) and consumer power is a sweet spot for young start-ups to validate their business models and products.”
Dzuleira reflects on how her corporate career has soared over the years, describing it as a long, yet rewarding journey. “I guess a defining moment for me was the first time I was appointed as a CEO,” she shares. “I was the CEO of a fund management entity prior to becoming the CEO of MaGIC. It was a defining moment as it altered my career trajectory to a position of leadership, which required a complete shift in my thinking.”
When asked what’s next on her agenda, Dzuleira’s response is simple: inspire actions. “I have big dreams for the Malaysian start-up ecosystem,” she highlights. “I hope to continue to play an important role in shaping it further.”
