Bachtiar Karim

Publicity-shy Karim, 58, runs one of Indonesia’s biggest private palm oil companies. He learnt the ropes from the young age of 20, when he was asked to handle the family’s soap company after the death of his grandfather — the engineering graduate increased the company production from 120 tons to 400 tons per month, and continued to make technological and operational improvements. Today, the company exports palm oil mostly to India, the world’s largest edible oil importer.
