Born in Hong Kong, Lam, 66, moved to Taiwan to study electrical engineering at university. He and his former classmates launched handheld calculator maker Kimpo. Lam became president, building the company into the world’s largest contract calculator maker. In 1988, when he could not persuade the company’s directors to take a risk on notebook PCs, he quit and founded Quanta with a team of Kimpo engineers. Today, Quanta is the world’s largest ODM supplier of notebook computers and other electronics products.
