Former chemistry professor Gupta, 77, reportedly borrowed his wife’s savings to buy a small vitamin company in 1968. Over the next few years, they switched to making pharmaceuticals, and turned Lupin into one of the world’s largest makers of anti-tuberculosis drugs, and the world’s seventh largest manufacturer of generic drugs with revenues of more than US$1.8 billion.
