Park, 56, is the father of South Korea’s mutual fund industry. His mother taught him the value of money by charging him as much as 17 percent interest on funds she loaned him. As a fresh graduate, Park started his first business — writing and selling company research reports. Realising that small investors hungered for easier access to the market, he founded Mirae Asset Investment Advisory and a venture capital affiliate in 1997. He launched the country’s first closed-end mutual fund the following year; today, the group operates in 12 countries and has more than US$64 billion in assets under management.
