Cheong Jun Hoong

Despite having already snagged a gold medal during the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary earlier this year in the final of individual women’s 10m platform category, the national diver remains resolute that a slice of humble pie a day keeps her afloat in her career. She owes her victories, which also include a silver medal from the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil last year, to her family, friends and coaches. “In my career, there are a lot of ‘downs’ – as it were, compared to ‘ups’, especially when injuries occur, which can be hurtful – not only physically, but mentally as well. If I am being honest, during times like those I’ve always thought of giving up,” says Jun Hoong, who besides diving professionally, is juggling her studies in Bachelor of Communications at University Putra Malaysia, hoping to graduate in two or three years’ time. “However, over the years, I’ve learned not to fear failure. When you fail, the persistency has to be there to spring you back up and keep you going,” she continues. “Whenever I reach a ‘down’ moment in my life, I choose to be optimistic instead, and believe that every challenge is God’s arrangement for an opportunity to mould me into someone stronger in every way.”
