Sometimes, the simple lure of the homelands is all it takes to spark greatness – especially when you’re a Malaysian abroad. For Liew Ooi Hann, founder and director of Jirnexu, making up his mind to return to Malaysia after studying and working in the United Kingdom was an obvious decision. “After a number of years working in investment banking in the UK, I wanted to start something for myself and I wanted to do my bit to contribute to Malaysia,” he confesses. “Returning to Malaysia to kick- start my entrepreneurial journey was the logical next step!”
Jirnexu owes its success to the simple fact that it is able to bridge a gap that banks and insurance companies had been unable to before. “Jirnexu enables banks, insurance companies and service providers to think mobile-first and innovate the way they generate leads online, turn those leads into customers, handle their fulfilment, and keep them loyal,” Hann adds.
Despite Jirnexu’s rapid growth and success, Hann is not one to rest on his laurels. In fact, he believes there are still plenty of opportunities for expansion and the market is rife with untapped potential as Malaysian financial institutions and service providers still have some way to go when it comes to digitalisation.
“To put things in perspective, when was the last time Malaysians were required to walk into a travel agent’s office to book a flight or make a phone call to hail a taxi?” Hann opines. “The day when a consumer is no longer required – but can still do so if they want – to walk into a bank branch or speak to an insurance agent for all their financial services needs is when we have reached maturity in digitalisation for personal financial services.”
