Mikitani, 50, founded Japanese e-tailer Rakuten in 1997 and grew it into what is now one of the world’s largest e-commerce marketplace selling everything from art to food, with over 10,000 staff and operations in 25 countries. In recent years, he has turned his attention to Western technology markets, acquiring US online rebate site Ebates and investing in companies like Pinterest. He recently invested US$300 million in Uber competitor Lyft.
