“The PC. Reinvented”. A tagline that’s a tough up to life up to, so we put it to the test. As firm believers in our trusty Macbook Air laptops, trading it in for the HP Spectre Folio was a flirty idea. 100% genuine chrome-tanned leather? Tempting. The sleek aesthetic and earthy brown tone even served as the inspiration behind Rizman Ruzaini’s Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) 2019 collection.
What we loved most was the ease and convenience of being able to work on-the-go — second to having forgotten our password in a dat and being saved by Windows Hello Face Recognition. As digital masterminds (or so we like to think), camping for hours in cafes is part and parcel of our daily work life. So battery that powers through is like coffee for our craft, fuelling up to 19 hours with MobileMark 2014, or between around eight to 11 hours if you’re having one of those days watching videos of cats on YouTube.
The ease of it all is at your fingertips (literally), and makes working on the Spectre Folio all that easy. Intuitive touchscreen functions lets you control your PC by making commands at the touch of your fingertips, just like you would with your smartphone. Even acrylic nails couldn’t make a dent through scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 4TM.
It’s all golden with performance on the inside too. The Spectre Folio uses 8th Generation Intel Core Processors and everybody’s nostalgic favourite, Windows now in its 10th operating system. No noisy hardware or fan means your PC runs quietly but on that note, the thin device comes with an external connector housing two Thunderbolt 3 ports and one USB-C port. In a function we never knew we needed, ports are reversible so you never have to feel like a muppet plugging in your USB upside down.
If the pen is mightier than the sword, the digital pen holds all the power — or at least as much power as one should have with a PC. Make notes, create, draw, or simply scribble over faces and bring it all to life the the 4K Mirco Edge Display in the tablet position. The digital pen, although no longer a revolutionary feature, certainly makes life a lot more organised, especially if you’re the sort to make lots of a post-it, notepad or sketchbook connoisseur. This feature came especially helpful for reviewing and editing documents on-the-go.
It’s all about making statements with the Spectre Folio — loud ones at that with HP Quad Speakers, HP Audio Boost and expert tuning by Bang & Olufsen. With your pending documents signed off, device flipped over into tab mode, and battery charged (in just half an hour), comes the best part of the day: relaxing in bed with a binge-worthy show on. Netflix in 8.2 million pixels in 4k, 3840 x 2160 resolution and 178° wide-viewing angles? Different ballgame, just like the Spectre Folio.
