Years of commitment and care in Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, has birthed KAHAWA ya CONGO — which means Hope of Congo — a smooth, fruity and unique coffee, and the first organic blend in Nespresso’s Reviving Origins range.
Nespresso is certainly evolving. Since the Nespresso Reviving Origins programme was launch in 2019, with the introduction of distinctive single-origin coffee from Eastern Zimbabwe, and the Caquetá and El Rosario regions of Colombia, followers by the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda, the brand moves its focus on the Kivu provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This time around, Nespresso is introducing its first organic blend in the Reviving Origins range.
Set along the serene, fertile shores of Lake Kivu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Congolese smallholder farmers are nurturing a one-of-its-kind organic coffee called KAHAWA ya CONGO. The exquisite coffee comes from rain-rich volcanic soils along the shore of Lake Kivu in Congo, an area with the potential to be among the world’s great coffee regions. However, farming families in the vicinity face extremely challenging conditions and restrictions.
Currently, 58% of households in the country lack access to clean water systems, and 15% of children do not get pass the age of five, with preventable and treatable diseases such as water-borne illnesses, acute respiratory infections and malaria among the leading causes. In the region alone, nearly 95% of families are experiencing financial deprivation due to healthcare challenges.
In collaboration with the Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI), Nespresso is helping to provide improved access to clean water and health services, at the same time, also helping farmers grow coffee sustainably for generations to come.
Nespresso’s First Organic Blend in Reviving Origins
The result of the work and care taking place in Kivu is KAHAWA ya CONGO, which translates Hope of Congo. As the first organic blend in the Reviving Origins range, the coffee gives out smooth and fruity expressions — enhancing the unique aroma of the coffee.
KAHAWA ya CONGO is a rare USDA certified organic coffee that is extremely smooth with nutty, cereal-like aromas. With milk, the aromas transform into a light, sweet and creamy cup full of biscuit notes, a hint of walnut and a silky texture.
Every cup of coffee from Congo, and all other Reviving Origins regions respectfully, contributes to the equipment, training or resources farmers and their communities need to create a better future — a sustainable and healthy ecosystem that gives back to the livelihood of the farmers. It is also preserving the future of this unique, exceptional coffee for consumers to enjoy.
Creating Transformative Impacts through Sustainability
With sustainability being the backbone of Nespresso business, Reviving Origins mirrors the brand philosophy of Creating Shared Value. For over three decades, Nespresso has been helping farming communities around the world produce the highest quality coffee, which creates a positive economic effect that ripples through the coffee farming ecosystem.
Reviving Origins is an integral part of Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Program, which is the brand’s sustainable sourcing model in coffee producing countries involving over 110,000 farmers across the world. The initiative, introduced in 2003 in collaboration with The Rainforest Alliance, helps improve yields and quality of harvests while protecting the environment and improving livelihoods of farmers and their communities.
Through its Reviving Origins programme, Nespresso is working to restore coffee agriculture and local coffee economic in Kivu, simply by helping farmers improve coffee quality and productivity, as well as embedding a sustainable ethos while increasing farmer incomes. Together with the global non-profit TechnoServe, the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) and coffee trader Virunga Coffee/Olam International, Nespresso is working with 2,500 farmers in South Kivu and is in the process of expanding the programme across North Kivu to potentially include up to 1,700 organic certified farmers.
As part of the AAA Program, Nespresso is also advocating gender equality with training that supports women’s participation and facilitates opportunities for women in leadership roles as lead farmer in the community.
Nespresso coffees are also packaged in aluminium, a material that preserves the quality and freshness of the coffee and can be recycled repeatedly. The brand enables recycling to be as easy as possible while offering customers several ways to recycle. By providing UPS recycling bags, customers can mail back used capsules or deposit them at selected drop-off locations in the city.
Collectively, Nespresso is planting the seeds of hope for sector revival, to grow a sustainable coffee future and bring lasting stability to farmers, their families, and the communities.
From 7 until 20 June, Nespresso Malaysia is having a special promotion and is giving out one set of Asia Second Life chopsticks to Nespresso Club Members when they purchase up to 80 capsules, including any of the Reviving Origins coffees. Additionally, with an add-on of another 40 capsules, Nespresso Club Members will receive a set of Caran D’ache fix pencil.
