With Raya ahead of us, we’ve got a number of reasons to celebrate already, including scrumptious buka puasa buffets, and Raya collections from our talented local designers. Bernard Chandran’s yearly collections are always a favourite, garnering glows from the crowd as each model walked down the runway at the Petang Raya 2019/2020 runway show at The St.Regis Kuala Lumpur.
The collection dares traditional values to push the boundaries of style. Celebrating the country’s cultural identity; a salutary one made up of the diversity of Malaysians, has always been important to Dato’ Bernard Chandran who comes from a mixed heritage upbringing.
Chandran was inspired by the intellectual 21st century woman. This collection was designed as a tribute to these fearless women who hold close to their beliefs and honour their curiosity towards ever-changing trends around the world. The ‘Baju Pesak’ is at the heart of the collection as it inspires a reinterpretation of conventional cuts with the respect of intricate detailing and beautiful embellishments.
“I like to challenge the norm and not conform to the conventional while giving the classical silhouettes a breath of fresh air,” shared Chandran.
With just the right amount of romance with shades like powder pink and lace detailing, the collection boldly channels the idea of a modern-day trendsetter with loud graphic lines, well-constructed drapes and billowy chiffon skirts. Fabrics like Pimai silk are extravagant and elevated with crystals and contrasting textures and hues.
The Petang Raya 2019/2020 menswear collection is as inspired, exuding an air of suaveness and confidence with every look. Its colour palette plays strong on contrasting tones decked in embellishment, similar to the essence of the women’s collection. Alas, the designer makes his signature wink with outside-the-box finishes, this time with the likes of crystal-embedded songkets.
