Portraying strength, courage, power, wisdom and nobility, the Lion Head has consistently featured in numerous Gucci collections, be it prints for ready-to-wear, Gucci décor or incorporated into the house’s initial jewellery designs as fashion pieces in silver.
Now, the motif takes on new life as a selection of fine jewellery aptly dubbed the Lion Head Collection.
Creative director Alessandro Michele is particularly partial to the Lion Head motif. It has been a substantial part of his creative vision since the advent of his collections for Gucci five years ago. He is often sighted wearing the Lion Head ring, which debuted at the men’s collection for Autumn/Winter 2015-16, his principal show staged for the house.
In the Lion Head Collection, the lion’s majestic visage takes shape in 18k white and yellow gold, artfully crafted into a variety of statement pieces. From earrings and pendant necklaces to rings, and bracelets set with coloured gemstones and diamonds. In every adornment, the Lion Head takes the spotlight, with the creature’s eyes gleaming with diamonds as it holds coloured gemstones in its teeth.
The Gucci Lion Head collection stands as a humble reminder to us all that our natural world boasts endless marvels. It is deserving of our sustained protection and conservation for generations to come.
The new collection, alongside many other bestial designs, represent Gucci’s enduring dedication to protecting the natural world. This year, Gucci joins the Lion’s Share Fund, a unique initiative aimed at raising much-needed financial resources required to address the crisis in nature and global climate change.
With the guidance of the United Nations Development Programme alongside a coalition of businesses and United Nations partners, the fund targets to raise over US$100 million per year in the next five years. The fund gears towards the protection of threatened species and their natural habitats.
Started in September 2018, the fund’s impact is already tangible. It aids the improvement of crucial radio systems for law enforcement officers in Mozambique’s Niassa Reserve as they protect wildlife. This aid has successfully reduced the rate of elephant poaching to zero. Moreover, the fund also invests in securing land for endangered orangutans, elephants and tigers in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
