Some 2000 years ago during the Chou Dynasty, there lived a Chinese poet and patriot named Qu Yuan. He was exiled for his reforms, and committed suicide by jumping into a river. Legend has it that the local people rushed to the river in their boats, beating their drums and splashing water to keep evil spirits away while also throwing in chunks of cooked rice into the river to prevent fishes from eating his’s body.
The Dragon Boat Festival has since become a yearly event to commemorate the people’s rescue attempt. Zongzi; pyramid-shaped glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in reed leaves, symbolise traditional Chinese patriotism. Chinese households honour the tradition by eating the zongzi, which comes in various fillings like mushroom and scallops.
