Licky Chan & The Poke Guy

You’re looking at the coolest ice cream parlour in KL that also houses a tattoo studio. Licky Chan is opened by the same team behind Joloko and only a few doors down, so you know it’s not going to be your regular ice cream shop. Its interior is eclectic and colourful — so are its ice cream flavours. You have a selection of vegan and dairy-free flavours alongside natural ingredients. Even the milk used in its regular dairy ice creams comes from fresh, grass-fed cow milk straight from a local farmer in Pahang. There are also boozy ice creams made with premium liquor such as chartreuse, mezcal, and also sake.

CUE@27

Continuing on the gentrification of Taman Paramount comes CUE@27, the neighbourhood’s newest eatery with decor that brings you several decades back in time. The menu features a selection of hearty food including pasta, burgers, and more, all with fusion flavours favouring pork as its choice of protein. We’re particularly fond of the cheekily-named Lamburger Hasil Dalam Negeri, which we’ll happily wash down with a selection of craft beers available.

Niko Neko Matcha 1.5

While not exactly a new cafe, Niko Neko Matcha 1.5 is newly revamped and reopened at its Lorong Maarof outlet. The new cafe takes on its regular stark white interior and hanging paper installations. It’s divided into two sections — the retail section where you order, and the dine-in section where you can watch your drink being made. Choose from a selection of different matcha, hojicha, and genmaicha green tea, where you can choose to have as a brewed drink or latte with your choice of milk. There are also some mocktail options made with the cafe’s matcha, recipes designed in collaboration with mixologist Shawn Chong. Then, settle down to some matcha pastries — we particularly liked the matcha loaves made warm.

Gekko Dining

Japanese tapas and cocktails go hand in hand at this new dining outlet along Jalan Kasah. Gekko Dining’s bar is helmed by Osamu Kinugawa, the same man who opened Bar Kinugawa and later Bar Shake in the city. He brings his Japanese bartending skills over to Gekko Dining now, and you’ll be able to find his signature drinks like the clear Bloody Mary cocktail and sake-based fruit cocktails. Sip on those with a side of Japas for the best kind of evening situation.

Kooky Cream Bangsar

Kooky Cream has a new outlet in Bangsar, and the neighbourhood can finally enjoy its iconic Rose Lychee Cake — and then some more. The new outlet is located in Jalan Abdullah, just a few doors away from Coley. We love the thought they’ve put into the details of the new cafe’s interior, juxtaposing white walls, flooring, and ceiling with colourful accents on its furniture and fittings. Settle down for some coffee and treat yourself to a slice or two of the many cakes Kooky Cream has.
